'YFE School of Excellence - prayatna' started on 5th Jan2009

The number of migrant population is increasingly growing in the metros. Along with this, problems associated with migration are also escalating. The most notable problem is the education of the children of these people.

Cyber city Gurgaon is also facing this problem and an estimated 1.5 lakh migrant children are still not enrolled in any school of the city. Most of them are occupied in different industries of the city and are increasing ‘child labour’ problem. To cater their needs, YFE Education Cell has taken initiative of opening a ‘primary school’ with the support of people of ‘Mullahera’ village. YFE volunteers started school on 5th January 2009. ‘Sarpanch’ of ‘Mullahera’ has given panchayat land to YFE for this noble cause and assured his full support.

Survey has already been conducted to identify children in nearby slums and now they are coming for their regular classes. Besides our own volunteering efforts, retired school teachers are also providing their services to the school.

Overall, we are concentrating on the following issues in our ‘School of Excellence’ named ‘Prayatna’
1) Most of the children are drop outs from government schools, so our main emphasis will be re-admission of these children in the neighborhood schools.
2) To retain children in school is our prime concern. Attendance should not drop significantly at any point of time. To attain this goal YFE volunteers will be visiting to their home place or slums fortnightly.
3) Check the progress of each child weekly and emphasize on all possible ways to provide good, quality education. We will update progress report of each child online at school blog for review.

Our goal is put the children back into the formal schools as early as possible.

YFE Organizes Massive Rally against terrorism in Gwalior on 25 January

Terrorists are continuously attacking on our self dignity and we are watching them helplessly without doing anything against it. This helplessness is giving birth to new kind of slavery under the oppressors that are striking anywhere anytime. If we continue to be silent, then we have to face serious consequences for this inaction on our part.

This is the time when we should show that we are united and we will fight for our country against all evils that are threatening the integrity and spirit of our country.

What is required is public voice against terrorism, against government apathy towards terrorism, against our weak political leadership and against ourselves who have elected such people in the government.

Agenda
Raise our voice against terrorism and force government to act (no promises will work) against terrorism.
Making police and public communication to make people know about their responsibility as a citizen to avoid terrorism attacks.
Taking pledge to vote and vote efficiently.
Public discussion on changes that needs to be done in security policy.
Forcing government to close all international borders that have become easy route for terrorists.

YFE Cloth Donation Campaign

YOUTH FOR EQUALITY organized a cloth donation campaign on Saturday,10th january 2009 for the needy people living on the streets of Delhi who cannot afford to buy warm clothes in this chilling winter. We tried to cover maximum possible slum areas including Nizammudin, Sarai Kale Khan and Govindpuri. YFE members , Sourabh, Sachin, Robin, Aasish, Raghav, Abhishek, Arun, Ranjan and Gautam played an active part in the event. They handled everything ,right from collection, packing and distribution of clothes.We are planning more clothe donation camps in this month. We know this may not be the solution for the misery of the people but this is a humble start from our part. We invite everybody in Delhi to donate clothes which are not of much use to them as they can be of great use for these needy people.

.Delhi saw huge hoarding at 20 locations as Thousands seeing them cheered and called up to join the movement and fuel the campaign. The Hoardings read as :

Youth for equality, the organization which gave India its largest non violent student’s movement against Caste based reservations in 2006 both on streets and in Supreme court is now throwing an open challenge to these casteist and corrupt politicians.

Sign the petition against criminalization of politics

One out of every five MLAs in five states where elections were held recently has a criminal background. In NCT this figure is close to 40%.

Of a total of 549 MLAs elected to assemblies in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Mizoram, 124 have criminal records with the Congress topping the list with 59 while the BJP has 49, according to a report prepared by ‘National Election Watch’.

Madhya Pradesh has a maximum of 54 such legislators while Rajasthan is second with 30 MLAs with criminal backgrounds. Delhi has 27 tainted MLAs followed by Chhattisgarh with 11 and Mizoram has 3.

Of the 3,179 candidates in Madhya Pradesh, 91 had criminal background, the study said, adding 27 legislators from the BJP, 23 from Congress and four others with criminal background won the elections. This constituted 23 per cent of the total 230 MLAs who were elected to the BJP-ruled state, the report claimed.

In Rajasthan, 2,194 candidates contested the polls, and 189 had criminal records. Thirteen from the Congress, seven from the BJP, and 10 others, including three from the BSP, won the polls, it said, adding 15 per cent of the 200 Rajasthan MLAs had a criminal background.

National capital Delhi, where 91 candidates had a criminal background, 16 from the Congress and nine from the BJP won in the electoral battle besides one each from the BSP and INLD. The figure comes to a whopping 39 per cent of a total of 70 seats.

In Chhattisgarh, which went to polls for 90 seats, a total of 1,066 candidates contested of whom nearly 76 had criminal records. The BJP and Congress MLAS with criminal records stood at six and five respectively, constituting nearly 12 per cent of the total seats.

The situation is no better in the Parliament. Nearly a quarter (23.2%) of the MPs has reported criminal cases against them. One out of two among them (over 50%) have cases that could attract penalties of imprisonment of five or more years. The states of Bihar, U.P., Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh that account for over 50% of the MPs with the high penalty criminal cases.
